Spasmokid
COMPOSITION :
Each 1 ml oral drops contains : Hyoscyamine sulfate 0.125 mg.
Each 5 ml syrup contain : Hyoscyamine sulfate 0.125 mg.
DESCRIPTION :
Hyoscyamine sulfate is anticholinergic, antispasmodic alkaloid. It inhibits gastrointestinal propulsive motility and decrease
gastric acid secretion it also control excessive pharyngeal, tracheal and bronchial secretions. Hyoscyamine sulfate inhibits
specifically the action of acetylcholine on structures innervated by postganglionic cholinergic nerves and on smooth muscle
that respond to acetylcholine but lack cholinergic innervation. Hyoscyamine sulfate is absorbed completely by oral
administration and distributed throughout the entire body with half-life 2-3.5 hour then the majority of it excreted
unchanged in the urine within 12 hours.
INDICATIONS :
- Infants and Children colic.
- To control gastric secretion, visceral spasm and hyper motility in cases associated with abdominal cramps.
- as adjunctive therapy in treatment of irritable bowel syndrome also in functional intestinal disorders to reduce symptoms
such as those seen in mild dysenteries and diverticulitis.
- It can be used in the therapy of poisoning by anti-cholinesterase agents.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION :
- Infants ( 2.5 – 4 kg ) : 2 – 3 drops.
- Infants ( 5 – 7 kg) : 4 – 5 drops.
- Infants ( 8 – 10 kg) : 6 drops.
- Children (2 – 6 years) : 0.25 – 0.5 ml.
- Children (6 – 12 years) : 0.5 – 1 ml of drops or (2.5 - 5 ml) of syrup.
- Adults : 1 – 2 ml of drops or (5 - 10 ml) of syrup.
* The dose can be repeated as needed but not excess dose every 4 hours.
RESTRICTION ON USE :
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Hyoscyamine sulfate or any anticholinergic drugs.
- Glaucoma, obstructive uropathy, gastrointestinal obstructive disease, paralytic ileus, intestinal atony, unstable
cardiovascular status in acute hemorrhage, sever ulcerative colitis, toxic megacolon and myasthenia gravis.
Precuations
- Autonomic neuropathy, hyperthyroidism,
- Coronary heart disease, Congestive heart failure, Cardiac arrhythmias, hypertension and renal diseases.
- Hiatal hernia associated with reflux esophagitis.
Effects on ability to drive and use machines
Spasmokid produce drowsiness or blurred vision, therefore, should not be taken during driving or using machines.
Use in pregnancy & Lactation
Should not be given during the pregnancy and lactating period.
DURG INTERACTION
Spasmokid interact with other antimuscarinics, amantadine, haloperidol, phenothiazines, monoamine oxidase inhibitors,
tricyclic antidepressants and antacids.
SIDE EFFECTS :
Dryness of the mouth, urinary hesitancy and retention, blurred vision, mydriasis with cycloplegia, transient bradycardia
followed by tachycardia with palpitations, increased ocular tension, constipation, headache, drowsiness, nervousness,
decrease sweating, allergic reactions and urticaria.
OVERDOSAGE :
In case of overdosage, anti cholinergic symptoms as urinary retention, dry mouth, redness of the skin, tachycardia and
transient visual disturbances may occur. So as treatment of this case, gastric lavage with medical charcoal should be
followed by magnesium sulphate (15%).
