Doxin

COMPOSITION :
Each capsule contains : Doxycycline hyclate USP equivalent to 100mg doxycycline.
DESCRIPTION :
Doxin (doxycycline hyclate) is a synthetically derived tetracycline with bacteriostatic properties against a broad
spectrum of bacteria and also some antiprotozoal properties. It acts by inhibiting protein synthesis in these
organisms. Doxycycline is highly absorbed from the GIT. Its absorption is not affected by food. It is bound to plasma
proteins by 80 - 95% and is widely distributed in the body tissues and fluids. It is excreted in faeces and its half life in
plasma is 15 - 25 hours.
INDICATIONS :
- Respiratory tract infections: pneumonia particularly that caused by mycoplasma.
- Laryngitis and sinusitis.
- Gastroenteritis caused by Shigella, E.coli and Cholera.
- Urinary tract infections as Syphilis (Treponema pallidum), Gonorrhoea (Neisseria), lymphogranuloma inguinale and
granuloma inguinale.
- Pelvic inflammatory disease in women.
- Epidydimitis, orchitis and nongonococcal urethritis (caused by chlamydia)
- Acne vulgaris.
- Malta fever, spotted fever, typhus fever, Q fever and remittent fever.
- As an adjunct in the treatment of malignant Plasmodium falciparum malaria.
- In the treatment of trachoma.
DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION :
Doxin Capsules should be swallowed with a plenty of fluid in the sitting or standing position.
- Mild to moderate infections : 100 mg twice daily for the first day followed thereafter by 100 mg once daily .
- Severe infections : 100 mg twice daily.
RESTRICTIONS ON USE :
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to tetracyclines.
Precautions
- Should be avoided in children below 8 years for the risk of permanent teeth coloration and the formation of a stable
calcium compound in the bone forming tissues.
- Monitoring hepatic and renal functions is advisable.
Use in Pregnancy and lactation
Not recommended during pregnancy and lactation except after consulting the physician.
DRUG INTERACTIONS :
- The absorption of tetracyclines is impaired by antacids containing aluminium, calcium magnesium or bismuth.
Thus antacids should be taken 2 hours before or after tetracyclines administration.
- Sodium bicarbonate decreases the absorption of tetracyclines.
- Cimetidine decreases the absorption of tetracyclines.
- Tetracyclines decrease insulin demand.
- Tetracyclines decrease the efficacy of oral contraceptives.
- Tetracyclines increase the serum levels of digoxin and lithium.
- Tetracyclines increase the serum levels of oral anticoagulants and thus decrease prothrombin level significantly.
ADVERSE EFFECTS :
Nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, erythema & photosensitivity.
STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS :
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light.
