ALBEX
📌 COMPOSITION
Each chewable f/c tablet contains : Albendazole 200 mg, 400 mg.
Each 5 ml suspension (teaspoonful) contains : Albendazole 100 mg.
📌 DESCRIPTION
Albex (Albendazole) is a broad spectrum anthelmintic. It is absorbed from GIT and completely converted in the plasma to the active metabolite (sulphoxide) with a half-life of about 8 hours. The metabolite is essentially eliminated in the urine.
📌 INDICATIONS
Albex is indicated in the treatment of single and mixed intestinal parasitic infections caused by:
- Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworms)
- Trichuris trichuria (whipworms)
- Enterobius vermicularis (pinworms)
- Strongyloides stercoralis (threadworms)
- Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus (hookworms)
- Hydatid (Echinococcosis tapeworms)
- Neurocysticercosis (Taenia tapeworms)
📌 DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
The tablets can be chewed, crushed or swallowed whole and preferably taken with food as follows:
- The dose may be repeated after 3 weeks if no cure is achieved following first dose.
- Adults and children over 2 years (roundworms, hookworms, pinworms): 2 tablets (200 mg) or 1 tablet (400 mg) or 20 ml suspension as a single dose.
- Adults and children over 2 years (whipworms, threadworms): 2 tablets (200 mg) or 1 tablet (400 mg) or 20 ml suspension as a single dose once daily for 3 consecutive days.
- Patients weighing 60 kg or over (hydatid tapeworms): 2 tablets (200 mg) or 1 tablet (400 mg) or 20 ml suspension twice daily for 8–30 days.
- Patients weighing < 60 kg (hydatid tapeworms): 15 mg/kg/day divided in two doses for 8–30 days. Max. dose 800 mg/day.
- Patients weighing 60 kg or over (neurocysticercosis): 2 tablets (200 mg) or 1 tablet (400 mg) or 20 ml suspension twice daily for 28 days, then stop for 14 days, repeat this system two times.
- Patients weighing < 60 kg (neurocysticercosis): 15 mg/kg/day divided in two doses for 28 days (max. 800 mg/day), then stop for 14 days, repeat system two times.
📌 RESTRICTIONS ON USE
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to Albendazole or any of product components.
Precautions
- For women of childbearing age (15–40 years), Albex should be administered within 7 days of normal menstruation or after a negative pregnancy test.
- Albendazole is not recommended for children under 2 years of age.
- Caution should be taken in elderly with evidence of hepatic dysfunction.
- Caution should be taken in the presence of renal impairment and abnormal liver function test results.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Albendazole should not be used in pregnant women, and breast feeding should be stopped while taking Albendazole and for at least 5 days after finishing treatment.
📌 DRUG INTERACTIONS
Praziquantel may increase the plasma levels of Albendazole active metabolite.
📌 SIDE EFFECTS
Headache, dizziness, vomiting, gastrointestinal discomfort and mild skin rash.
📌 OVERDOSE
It is recommended that gastric lavage be performed and symptomatic supportive treatment be given if poisoning or excessive overdosage by Albendazole is suspected.
📌 STORAGE INSTRUCTIONS
- Albex chewable tablets : Store below 30°C in a dry place, protect from direct sunlight.
- Albex suspension : Store below 30°C, protect from direct sunlight.

- Albex 200 chewable tablets : Blister pack of 2 tablets and hospital packs of different sizes.
- Albex 400 chewable tablets : Blister pack of 1 tablet and hospital packs of different sizes.
- Albex Suspension : Bottle of 20 ml.
