📌 COMPOSITION
Each 5 ml (teaspoonful) contains:
- Chlorpheniramine Maleate 4 mg
- Dextromethorphan Hydrobromide 6.25 mg
- Ephedrine Hydrochloride 7.5 mg
- Guaiphenesin 50 mg
📌 DESCRIPTION
Tussimax syrup is an effective formula that contains four active ingredients, including Chlorpheniramine, which is an antihistaminic agent. Dextromethorphan acts centrally to reduce cough with no depression of the central nervous system. Ephedrine has a sympathomimetic effect which causes relaxation of bronchospasm, hence breathing becomes more convenient. Guaiphenesin has a mild expectorant effect by reducing the viscosity of tenacious secretions.
📌 INDICATIONS
- Acute and chronic bronchitis.
- Common cold accompanied by cough.
- As an adjuvant in asthmatic patients, due to the relaxant effect on the bronchi.
📌 DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
Tussimax syrup is administered two to four times daily as follows:
- Adults: 10 ml
- Children: 5 ml
📌 RESTRICTIONS ON USE
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
- In patients who are taking or have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) within the last two weeks.
Precautions
- Patients should be warned about possible additive effects with alcohol and central nervous system depressants.
- Administer with caution to the elderly and to patients with diabetes mellitus, hyperthyroidism, prostatic hypertrophy, cardiovascular disorders, hypertension, arrhythmia, or patients taking sympathomimetic agents.
- Effect on the ability to drive vehicles or use machines: Administer with caution since it may cause drowsiness.
Use in Pregnancy & Lactation
There are no studies on animals or humans, so Tussimax should not be used during pregnancy or lactation unless prescribed by a physician.
📌 DRUG INTERACTIONS
- Concomitant administration with alcohol or sedative drugs will potentiate the sedative effects of Chlorpheniramine maleate.
- Concomitant administration with MAOIs leads to increased blood pressure.
- Concomitant administration with sympathomimetic agents or theophylline leads to increased cardiac stimulation.
📌 SIDE EFFECTS
Some mild and transient side effects may occur, such as: drowsiness, headache, fatigue, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal disturbances.
