Lozertab
📌 COMPOSITION
Each F/C tablet contains: Losartan potassium 50 mg.
📌 DESCRIPTION
Lozertab (losartan) belongs to a group of medicines called angiotensin‑II receptor antagonists. Angiotensin‑II is a substance produced in the body which binds to receptors in blood vessels, causing them to contract. This results in an increase in blood pressure. Lozertab prevents the binding of angiotensin‑II to these receptors, causing the blood vessels to relax, which in turn lowers blood pressure. Lozertab slows the decrease of kidney function in patients with high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.
📌 INDICATIONS
- To treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults and children and adolescents 6‑18 years of age.
- Reduction of the risk of stroke in patients with hypertension and left ventricular hypertrophy.
- Treatment of diabetic nephropathy with an elevated serum creatinine and proteinuria in patients with type 2 diabetes and a history of hypertension.
📌 DOSAGE & ADMINISTRATION
- Hypertension: Usual starting dose 50 mg once daily; can be increased to a maximum dose of 100 mg once daily as needed. The maximal blood pressure lowering effect should be reached 3‑6 weeks after beginning treatment.
- Hypertensive Patients with Left Ventricular Hypertrophy: usual starting dose 50 mg once daily.
- Nephropathy in Type 2 Diabetic Patients: Usual starting dose 50 mg once daily. The dose can be increased to 100 mg once daily depending on your blood pressure response.
- Children aged 6‑18 years: The recommended starting dose in patients who weigh between 20 and 50 kg is 0.7 mg of losartan per kg of body weight administered once a day (up to 25 mg). The doctor may increase the dose if blood pressure is not controlled.
📌 RESTRICTIONS ON USE
Contraindications
- Patients with hypersensitivity to losartan.
- Patients with diabetes, severe impaired liver function or impaired kidney function and treated with a blood pressure lowering medicine containing aliskiren.
Precautions
Caution should be taken and tell the doctor in the following cases:
- History of angioedema, extreme loss of fluid (excessive vomiting or diarrhoea, receiving diuretics), impaired liver function, heart failure with or without renal impairment, cardiac arrhythmias, problems with your heart valves or heart muscle, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, primary hyperaldosteronism.
- Serum potassium should be monitored periodically.
- Losartan is not recommended for use in children under 6 years of age or with a creatinine level of less than 30 ml/min.
Use in Pregnancy and Lactation
Lozertab is not recommended in early pregnancy, and must not be taken after the third month of pregnancy, as it may cause serious harm to your baby if used after the third month of pregnancy. Losartan is not recommended during breast‑feeding.
Effects on ability to drive or use machines
Lozertab is unlikely to affect your ability to drive or use machines. However, as with many other medicines used to treat high blood pressure, Lozertab may cause dizziness or drowsiness in some people. If this happens, you should consult your doctor.
📌 DRUG INTERACTIONS
Caution should be taken when co‑administering Lozertab with the following drugs:
- Agents increasing serum potassium: can cause an increased risk of hyperkalaemia.
- Lithium: increases the risk of lithium toxicity.
- NSAIDs: increase the risk of renal impairment and reduced urination, and may reduce the effect of Lozertab.
- ACE inhibitors or aliskiren.
- Other blood pressure lowering medicines: they may additionally reduce your blood pressure.
Lozertab with food and drink:
- Lozertab can be taken with or without food.
- Grapefruit juice should be avoided while taking Lozertab.
📌 ADVERSE EFFECTS
Dizziness, dose‑related orthostatic effects, low blood pressure (especially after excessive loss of water from the body within blood vessels, e.g. in patients with severe heart failure or under treatment with high doses of diuretics), debility, fatigue, hypoglycaemia, hyperkalaemia, changes in kidney function, anaemia and an increase in blood urea, serum creatinine and serum potassium in patients with heart failure.
